PPA Epoxy Grout & General FAQs

General Questions

  • Why does bathroom, kitchen, or patio grout crack?

Grout cracking is a common issue caused by movement between two surfaces. Homes naturally shift over time due to humidity, temperature changes, foundation settling, and other factors. If the grout used is rigid (like cement grout), it can crack when surfaces such as a bathtub and tiled walls move in different directions.

  • What is PPA Epoxy Grout?

PPA Epoxy Grout is a high-performance grout made from epoxy resins, silica fillers, pigments, and a hardener. Unlike cement-based grout, it does not use Portland cement or water in its mixture. It is non-porous, waterproof, stain-resistant, and highly durable, making it ideal for high-moisture and high-traffic areas.

  • What is cement grout?

Cement grout is a traditional grout made from Portland cement, filler particles, and water-retention additives. While it is a cost-effective option, it is porous, which means it can absorb water and stains over time, leading to discolouration.

PPA Epoxy Grout vs Cement Grout

  • PPA Epoxy Grout vs Cement Grout

What is the main difference between PPA Epoxy Grout and cement grout?

PPA Epoxy Grout: Made from epoxy resins and fillers, it is highly durable, waterproof, and stain-resistant. It is non-porous, making it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and patios.

Cement Grout: Made from cementitious powder, it is cheaper but porous, prone to water absorption, and susceptible to staining and discolouration over time.

  • Why use PPA Epoxy Grout?

PPA Epoxy Grout offers many benefits:

    • Waterproof and stain-resistant
    • Highly durable and resistant to chemicals, abrasions, and cracking
    • Non-porous, preventing mould, mildew, and bacteria growth
    • Provides consistent colour and a strong bond
    • It is perfect for areas exposed to water, grease, and harsh chemicals, such as bathrooms, kitchens, patios, schools, and commercial kitchens.

However, it can have a plastic-like finish that some homeowners may not prefer, and it requires more time and precision to apply compared to cement grout.

  • Where should I use PPA Epoxy Grout versus cement grout?

PPA Epoxy Grout: Use in areas exposed to moisture, heavy use, and chemicals, such as tiled floors, splashbacks, bathrooms, showers, patios, kitchens, and commercial spaces. It provides an additional layer of protection alongside waterproofing membranes.

Cement Grout: Use in low-moisture, low-traffic areas where budget is a concern.

  • Is PPA Epoxy Grout waterproof?

Yes, PPA Epoxy Grout is completely waterproof due to its non-porous nature. It resists moisture and staining, making it the top choice for wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and patios.

  • Can PPA Epoxy Grout be applied over cement-based grout?

Yes, you can apply epoxy grout over cement-based grout, but you must first remove the existing cement grout to at least halfway down the tile depth. Use tools like a scraper or grout saw to achieve this. For overhead applications, allow the epoxy grout mixture to stiffen slightly before applying to improve adhesion.

Coverage & Application

  • What is the coverage of PPA Epoxy Grout?

What is the coverage of PPA Epoxy Grout?

Each 400ml tube provides approximate coverage based on a 15mm depth of fill:

    • 1.5mm Joint = 4.5 sqm
    • 3mm Joint = 3.0 sqm
    • 5mm Joint = 2.5 sqm

Coverage may vary depending on tile size and joint depth.

  • How do I apply PPA Epoxy Grout?

Follow these steps for a smooth application:

Prepare the Surface: Clean tile gaps and apply masking tape along edges.

Attach the Nozzle: Secure the nozzle to the grout tube.

Load the Grout Gun: Insert the tube into a grout gun.

Prime the Tube: Discard 5-10ml of grout to ensure a smooth flow.

Apply the Grout: Fill the joints evenly and consistently.

Smooth the Grout: Use a suitable tool to level the grout.

Cure the Grout: Allow 6-8 hours for the grout to cure before scraping off excess material.

Tip: For colder conditions, warm the grout tube in hot water for 5-7 minutes to improve flow. Optimal application temperature is 15-40°C.

Health & Safety

  • What safety precautions should I take when using PPA Epoxy Grout?

Wear Protective Gear: Use gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection.

Skin Contact: Wash immediately with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical help.

Eye Contact: Rinse thoroughly with water for several minutes, removing contact lenses if possible. Seek medical attention if irritation continues.

Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Rinse your mouth and seek immediate medical advice.

Ventilation: Apply the grout in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling fumes.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, out of reach of children and pets.
